LECTURE PROGRAMME CONTINUES "UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT"

The EU Trade Commissioner M. Pascal LAMY gave a lecture at the invitation of CSC Brussels on the subject "Globalisation, governance and trade: how can the international institutions work for the common good?" The lecture, on November 7 was the second in a new season of lunchtime lectures. The first was given by the previous President of the European Parliament, M. Jose-Maria Gil-Robles, MEP, on October 10th.

The lectures were formerly organised jointly by the AOES (an ecumenical association of civil servants) and the Foyer Catholique Europeen. Latterly OCIPE has been involved through its International Director Fr Pierre de Charentenay. The AOES is set to dissolve itself at a forthcoming meeting after discussions over the past year, and its work will continue through the Church and Society Commission.

Last year's lecture programme featured four lectures on Fundamental Rights to coincide with the discussion of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. These are to be published early next year and will also include a final lecture, to be delivered on the eve of the discussion of the final form of the Charter at the EU summit in Nice in December, by the Earl of Stockton, MEP whose grandfather was British Prime Minister Harold MacMillan. His lecture is entitled "Bigger People, Smaller Governments" and will be given at 13 h on Tuesday, December 5th in the Lieu de Recueillement at 86 Rue de la Loi, Brussels (an EU Commission building).
