Today the Synod of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), meeting in Ulm, has elected Dr. Margot Kässmann as the new chairperson of its Council. Since 1999 Dr Kässmann has been the Lutheran Bishop of Hanover. She is the first woman to be elected as the leader of the EKD. She will succeed Bishop Wolfgang Huber, who is retiring.
